Prof. ZHOU Tianjun Appointed WCRP WGCM Member

Co-invited by the Word Climate Research Programme (WCRP) Director and WCRP Joint Scientific Committee(JSC) Chair, and approved by the 37th session of WCRP JSC meeting , Prof. ZHOU Tianjun from the Institute of Atmospheric Physics (IAP), Chinese Academy of Sciences was appointed to serve as a member of the WCRP Working Group on Coupled Modelling. His 3-year term office began from January 2017.

WCRP Working Group on Coupled Modelling (WGCM) is one of the four expert working group of WCRP. The overall mission of the group is to foster the development and review of coupled climate models. This includes the organization of model intercomparison projects aimed at understanding natural climate variability and predictability on decadal to centennial time scales, and predicting the response of the climate system to changes in natural and anthropogenic forcing. These activities are implemented in close cooperation with WCRP core projects, the JSC/CAS Working Group on Numerical Experimentation (WGNE) and partner programmes. Its current activities include leading the WCRP Grand Challenge on "Clouds, Circulation and Climate Sensitivity" and in collaboration with many groups and partners within WCRP and beyond, working on the next phase of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6). Dr. Cathy Senior from Hadley Centre, UK Met Office and Dr. Greg Flato from Canadian Centre for Climate Modelling and Analysis co-chair WGCM.

Prof. ZHOU is the Assistant Director of IAP, the Deputy Director of the Sate Key Laboratory of Numerical Modeling for Atmospheric Sciences and Geophysical Fluid Dynamics (LASG), and Deputy Director of Climate Change Research Center, Chinese Academy of Sciences. His research interests include coupled atmosphere-ocean modeling and climate dynamics, East Asian climate change and climate variability, air-sea interaction and monsoon predictability.
