LASG experts attended CAS-CSIRO Climate Theme Project Meetings

Professor XIAO Ziniu and Professor LING Jian attended the workshop of ‘CAS-CSIRO Climate Theme Project Meetings’ in Hobart from 6-11 November 2017. The workshop gathered 21 scientists, including four from CSIRO Land & Water and Data 61, twelve from Institute of Atmospheric Physics (IAP) and Institute of Urban Environment (IUE) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), and five from Institute of Climate Change Study (DRAGON Institute-Mekong) of Can Tho University (CTU) in Vietnam.  These researchers belong to research teams of three collaborative projects under the CAS-CSIRO Climate Theme. One of them is the Extreme Droughts and Floods in Changing Climate – A New Normal & Adaptation Pathways for an Integrated Lancang-Mekong River Basin, led by Prof XIAO Ziniu (CAS-IAP) and Dr Minh Nguyen (CSIRO L&W). The workshop started with a day trip to visit the Warra Forest’s automated CO2 flux monitoring station of the Australian Terrestrial Ecosystem Research Network; and followed by a half day learning and engaging with leading CSIRO scientists from Ocean & Atmosphere, Climate Science Centre, Centre for Southern Hemisphere Oceans Research, and visiting some laboratories in CSIRO Hobart. The workshop then proceeded with a series of presentations and facilitated discussions to review the progress and explore collaborative research activities within and among the three projects. It has provided a unique opportunity of face-to-face learnings and fruitful discussions among the scientists from different disciplines, ranging from climate science, risks and resilience modelling, to climate adaptation pathways, stakeholder engagement, and community-based sustainable development. As a result, sensible ways for efficient cooperation with good understanding of responsibility and expectation were identified between the teams and/or across the projects.

The workshop’s activities and achievements of the projects were then presented by Prof LIN Zhaohui and Dr Paul Bertsch, the Climate Theme Leaders at the CAS-CSIRO Joint Steering Committee Meeting in Sydney on 13 November 2017. The potential impacts of the theme’s projects with their multidisciplinary efforts and potential linkages to other CAS-CSIRO themes will help to enhance future collaborative opportunities for the CAS-CSIRO partnership both internally and externally.
