On February 7, 2022，Dr. ZHANG Wenxia from the Institute of Atmospheric Physics (IAP) at the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Dr. Kalli Furtado from the UK Met office were interviewed by the Newton Fund. The online interview focused on the Climate Science for Service Partnership China (CSSP China) project and was presided over by Prof. Paul Monks, Chief Scientific Adviser from the UK Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS）

Dr. ZHANG Wenxia and Dr. Kalli Furtado talked to Prof. Paul Monks about their collaboration in water cycle research, covering the amplifying precipitation variability under global warming and the associated increasing risks of droughts and floods, as well as causes for these climate extremes. Both sides highlighted the importance of international collaboration under CSSP China project and looked forward to collaborative research prospects on climate services including improving the understanding of water cycle changes to better predict and tackle the climate extreme events in the future.

"The Climate Science for Service Partnership China (CSSP China)"，supported by the UK and Chinese governments through the UK-China Research and Innovation Partnership Fund (the Newton Fund in China), began in 2014. CSSP China builds on existing links between China Meteorological Administration (CMA), the Institute of Atmospheric Physics (IAP) at the Chinese Academy of Sciences and UK Met office. It makes possible the creation of enduring and sustainable partnerships with a variety of leading Chinese and UK institutes, through workshops, scientist exchanges, and joint research and development projects that strengthen science and innovation capacity.
