IAP Approved as One of WMO Meteorological Originating Centers

World Meteorological Organization (WMO) recently approved the Institute of Atmospheric Physics (IAP), Chinese Academy of Sciences under the Alliance of International Science Organizations (ANSO) one of its meteorological originating centres (WMO code 291, abbreviation ANSO). IAP FGOALS-f2 prediction system will represent ANSO to provide global forecast data for the Sub-seasonal to Seasonal Prediction Project (S2S) Phase II.

FGOALS-f2 prediction system is an important platform for the Multi-model-Integrated Subseasonal-to-Seasonal Prediction and Application in Disaster Risk Reduction (MISSPAD), a network sponsored by IAP scientists and supported by ANSO and the National Natural Science Foundation ten-year flagship programme "Change of the Land-Air Coupled System over the Tibetan Plateau and Its Global Climate Effect".

ANSO-MISSPAD team participated in the session 1 of the S2S Forecast Technical Committee Network Meeting on January 19, 2021(session 1 is for EU, Asia and Australia, session 2 for EU and North America)

Researchers from the State Key Laboratory of Numerical Modeling for Atmospheric Sciences and Geophysical Fluid Dynamics (LASG)/ IAP formed the core of the MISSPAD team. As one of the ANSO collaborative research, the team has been committed to weather to climate seamless forecasting in countries along the Belt and Road Initiative. In October 2020, the network joined the S2S project and provided forecast products such as temperature, pressure, precipitation, sea ice and typhoons for global users. On January 19, 2021, the team participated in the session 1 of the S2S Forecast Technical Committee Network Meeting (session 1 is for EU, Asia and Australia, session 2 for EU and North America), hosted by European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), to exchange information on numerical model development, data sharing, work proposals and plans. Thus, with continuous efforts of ANSO-MISSPAD, IAP was officially approved by the WMO as a meteorological originating centre.

Chinese Embassy in Sri Lanka social media posted FGOALS-f2 prediction information during an oil tanker fire rescue

The Sub-seasonal to Seasonal Prediction Project (S2S) was jointly launched by the World Weather Research Programme (WWRP) and the World Climate Research Programme in November 2013, intending to improve the forecast skill for high-impact weather events on the sub-seasonal to seasonal timescale (from 2 weeks to a season) and bridge the gap between medium-range and seasonal forecasting. The project is currently in its second phase.

S2S is crucial for coping with international emergent events. On September 3,2020, an oil tanker caught fire in Sri Lanka southeast coast. ANSO-MISSPAD provided useful assistance in the fire rescue and disaster reduction.
