2nd China Greenhouse Gas Monitoring Conference Held Online to Serve the Country's Carbon Peak

On November 11-12, 2020, the 2nd China Greenhouse Gas Monitoring Conference (2nd CGGC) was successfully held online, with more than 200 experts and scholars from more than 100 units at home and abroad participating in the conference through Tencent conferences and live broadcasts, hosted by LASG, Institute of Atmospheric Physics (IAP), Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Professor LU Riyu, Secretary General of the IAP, delivered a speech at the opening ceremony, introducing the background, purpose, schedule and significance of the meeting. LU and members of science committee of the meeting gave high praise to the first meeting hosted last year, which promoted peer exchanges and international integration, planed the establishment of the China Carbon Monitoring Alliance, and published a series of results in a joint special issue highlighting major outcomes of the conference. They also hoped the 2nd CGGC could serve to reach the country's carbon peak and carbon-neutral and help with carbon emission reduction in both policy as well as technology.

Keynote speakers include: Phil DeCOLA, Chairman of the WMO/IG3IS Scientific Committee; Professor JIANG Kejun of the Energy Research Institute, National Development and Reform Commission; Professor Ning ZENG from the University of Maryland; Associate Professor LIU Zhu of Tsinghua University; Professor CHEN Huilin of the University of Groningen in the Netherlands, and Professor LIU Cheng of the University of Science and Technology of China.

The conference focused on the themes covering "the impact of the epidemic on greenhouse gas concentration and emissions and green recovery", "progress in the development of domestic monitoring instruments and new monitoring technologies", land monitoring, remote sensing monitoring, water monitoring, inventory and other topics. More than 40 academic reports in a two-day period were delivered smoothly. Attendants provide precise scientific understanding, technical support and solutions to major national development issues such as carbon monitoring, carbon trading, carbon sequestration, and carbon neutrality.
