LASG Held International Workshop on Weather and Climate Variabilities and Their Mechanisms

The State Key Laboratory of Numerical Modeling for Atmospheric Sciences and Geophysical Fluid Dynamics (LASG) held an international workshop on weather and climate variabilities and their mechanisms from 7 to 8 August 2019 in Beijing. Around 200 scholars from 25 institutes both at home and abroad attended.

Prof. XIAO Ziniu LASG director welcomed the attendees at the opening ceremony. He said that with the development of social economy, the impacts of severe weather, climate anomalies and climate change on human society become more and more evident. In the past half century Chinese scientists have made outstanding contribution in atmospheric science. He encouraged young researchers to learn from senior scientists and continue to explore in the field.

During the two-day meeting, thirty-six renowned scientists in earth science gave invited talks, which focused on Asian monsoon, global warming, extreme weather, the El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO), tropical cyclone and Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO). These talks concerning frontier topics in atmospheric research were well received.

The workshop as a high-level academic event provided a good opportunity for participants to exchange latest findings in the current status of studies on weather and climate variabilities, and their future challenges.
