High Resolution Sea Ice Model Development Project Kicked Off

On September 21, 2018, the project titled "Development of High Resolution Sea Ice Model" (Project No. 2018YFA0605900, PI: Prof. LIU Jiping) held a kick-off meeting at the Institute of Atmospheric Physics (IAP), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). This project aims to develop a high-resolution sea ice model that can be applied to multi-scale modeling in the context of rapid sea ice changes. The meeting officially launched the project and discussed the implementation plan.

CAS Academicians XU Guanhua from the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST), Chen Dake from the Second Institute of Oceanography, State Oceanic Administration (SOA), Prof. Hu Yongyun from Peking University, Prof. Qi Yiquan from Hohai University, Prof. Du Yan from the South China Sea Institute of Oceanology, CAS, Prof. CHENG Xiao from Beijing Normal University, Prof. ZHU Jiang from IAP, Prof. QIAO Fangli from the First Institute of Oceanography, SOA, Prof. DONG Changming from Nanjing University of Information Science & Technology (NUIST), MOST and CAS administrative leaders were invited to the meeting. More than 50 project members attended.

Prof. XIAO Ziniu, LASG director chaired the meeting. ZHANG Feng, Director of MOST High-Tech Research and Development Center introduced the management requirements for the National Key Research and Development Program. LI Yinghong, deputy director of CAS Bureau of Frontier Science and Education, ZHU Jiang, IAP Director General pledged support for the project. Prof. LIU Jiping reported on the project background, key scientific issues, main research content, overall implementation plan, research basis and platform, and expected output. Scientists in charge of the four subprojects then introduced specific implementation plans. XU Guanhua and CHEN Dake fully affirmed the implementation plan and advised on how to meet major national scientific needs and solve key scientific problems. Experts present also provided constructive suggestions on research content, technical route and the application of sea ice model. In the following project implementation session, project members had in-depth discussion on how to improve the implementation plan based on experts’ suggestions and clarified the tasks of each subproject.

The meeting, while kicking off the project, strengthened academic exchange among members and thus laid a good foundation for the smooth implementation of the project.

Brief information about the project:

"Development of High Resolution Sea Ice Model" (Project No. 2018YFA0605900, PI: Prof. LIU Jiping) belongs to the National Key Research and Development Program of China, which is sponsored by MOST. The project co-undertaken by IAP, Dalian University of Technology, Polar Research Institute of China, Nanjing University of Information Science & Technology, the National Marine Environmental Forecasting Center and Ocean University of China aims to develop physical parameterizations suitable for high-resolution and multi-scale sea ice modeling. The project includes four subprojects: 1) sea ice thermodynamic parameterizations for multi-scale modeling, 2) sea ice dynamic parameterizations for non-continuum sea ice, 3) observational data systems supporting parameterization development and evaluation of sea ice model, 4) application of high-resolution sea ice model in Earth System Models.
