MJO session draw more unexpected attention at AOGS 2018 Meeting

The Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO), the dominant intraseasonal variability in the tropics, connects weather and climate globally. The MJO can modulate the onset of the East Asian monsoon and tropical cyclone genesis in the western North Pacific. The MJO also interacts with ENSO and other climate modes in and out of tropics. Therefore, MJO is treated as the one of the key sources for the sub-seasonal forecast. MJO session at AOGS 2018 Meeting was convened by Prof. Ziniu Xiao and Prof. Jian Ling, and there are total 39 oral and poster presentations from China mainland, United States, South Korea, Japan, and China Taiwan.

Prof. Chih-Pei Chang from National Taiwan University, Taiwan / Naval Postgraduate School, United States presented the advantages of SVD in revealing the impacts of MJO on the East Asian Winter. Prof. Bin Wang from University of Hawaii talked about the dynamics-oriented Diagnostic method to evaluate the MJO simulation and Dr. Chidong Zhang from NOAA revealed the relationship between the MJO and QBO and its possible mechanisms. The meeting room fully congested with participants and audiences all the time, and the presentations and discussions contribute to a broad range of issues on theory, modeling, prediction and observation of the MJO.
